Top Ten helpful hints for Parents:

1. Arrival and dismissal

If your child is not a bus student please help them to arrive 10-15 prior to the first bell. Outdoor supervision starts at 8:10 when the first bus arrives. If your child will be away or late due to appointments please phone the school between 8:00 am and 9:00 at 250-428-2051 or email clerical.ares@sd8.bc.ca. Late students need to sign in at the office in order to amend attendance record and ensure their safe arrival. The school will call about unaccounted for absences as part of a safe arrival program.

2. Classroom visitations

If you wish to visit the classroom or speak to the teacher, please do so after dismissal from the school day. You can contact your classroom teacher by email or by calling the school. An updated staff list will be posted on the website.

3. Backpacks, inside shoes

Students should have a regular sized backpack for school, and non marking indoor shoes suitable for gym use and that are to be left at school. New shoes may be needed as your child grows. Please have these within the first couple weeks of school.

4. Parent communication

Parent communication may be different for each class, but please check for notes, activity information, or requests throughout the year. If money is needed to be sent to school please place in an envelop or baggie labelled with your child’s name and reason for the money. Your child may come home with curious information and incidences that occurred at school. Please seek further information from your classroom teacher and the school administration and/or let us know. All issues of safety should be reported in a timely manner and to the school administration.

5. Food and drink

All students are to bring a snack and lunch for each full day of school. Label containers for easy returns and misplaced items. We encourage students to bring water bottles that they can fill either from home or at school by the water filling station by the gym.

6. Breakfast program

Started Thursday.  Thanks to Kate and crew for being organized to get this started so quickly.

7. Dressing for the weather

Students may be outside for many programs as well as recess and lunch. Appropriate attire for the weather is expected.

8. Library books/scholastic

All students will have opportunity to sign our independent reading material to take home. Students are responsible for the care and respect of all school property including library books. Allow for daily reading at home to help your child develop a love of reading and to practice an essential skill for ongoing learning. Scholastic orders for your own material will be coming home. You are not obligated to purchase anything. This is just an option to get books that students tend to really enjoy.

9. Family support

If from time to time, home pressures are such that fees or other monies are unable to be made please contact the school Principal and we will make a plan of support that may include payments, partial or full subsidies or alternatives to ensure that students have the same opportunities.

10. Report Cards/parent teacher interviews

at this time report cards go home in November, March and June. Interim reports are in between these times. Reports are a snapshot of your child’s progress at that time and should outline what your child does well, what they need support with and how you as the parent can support them at home. A parent teacher interview is held typically in November on or around the early dismissal dates. But, contact your classroom teacher for an interview at any time throughout the year. We will do our best to accommodate times that work for you.
